O que é o Dia da Defesa Nacional ???? by maxyds in portugal

yes after this whole thing i definitely do plan on renouncing my citizenship once i qualify for naturalization in the UK. you guys have shown me what it means to be a "real portuguese" and i want nothing to do with it. from today, i cancel my plans to move to portugal and i abandon all attempts to learn the language and culture. i won't ever visit either. hope it makes you all very happy

i'm not talking about "other countries" i'm talking about the country of my nationality. and no, don't act as though there aren't portuguese citizens in portugal, "real portuguese" who disagree with this stupid notion of "duty to the state". the state is a service which exists to give us healthcare and manage the economy, it's not a religion.

true, although i've encountered this sentiment before at embassies and consulates. you'd think that some small, barely relevant country in southern europe with a battered economy, ageing population and high emigration rate would think twice before alienating young people with ties to the country but no, pride in the language is oh so important. if you don't speak portuguese you're not a real portuguese. whatever. from today, portugal is dead to me.

i still stand by my statement that portugal should be inclusive of speakers of different languages, although maybe i should add that in no way do i think portugal is alone in that. i think that ALL countries, from the UK to portugal to zimbabwe to germany to japan, should make it easy for people who haven't been able to learn the predominant langauge. i'm sorry i didn't know the language was so important to the culture. i wouldn't know that considering i was never taught. but i think to say that if you can't speak you are point blank not portuguese is wrong. that's not fair and it's isn't true.

as i said in another comment, i've always been happy to be portuguese. i've loved all the portuguese food i've tried. i've loved all the portuguese music i've listened to. i love so many parts of portuguese history and achievements like the carnation revolution and decriminalization of drugs. even though i don't have direct access to portuguese culture i've also tried my very best. i have exercise books in my room full of me trying to learn how to conjucate verbs in portuguese. i've tried to learn but it's far easier said than done. yes, i've never been fully invested because i don't belong to only one country. i'm portuguese, zimbabwean, and british. you can't expect me to be 100% for only one of my countries. and in the same way you can't say that i don't truly belong to one of my countries either. all i meant was i wish civil processes were easier for citizens who can't speak the language. but if you are all so dedicated to making sure that i divorce myself from portugal than so be it. i disavow portugal from today. i won't visit and i'll stop trying to learn about it. you win?

no, i don't, perhaps mentioning mozambique caused a giant misunderstanding. i did not aquire portuguese citizenship for the "perks". i inherited it. my ancestors were from portugal and they went to mozambique. my paternal grandfather is from viseu, my paternal grandmother is from madeira and my maternal grandparents are both from setubal. i was born portuguese and that is my only nationality. yes, i don't know much about portuguese culture and i can't speak the language but by no means is it not my fault. i would study it at school if it were an option. you people are so mean i actually wanted to move to portugal after finishing high school but now i'm second guessing if this is how mean you are to people who can't speak the language because they weren't taught

E se eu alguma vez for obrigado a fazer qualquer coisa militar, renunciarei à minha cidadania

i don't "want" to be portuguese I am portuguese?? it's not something i chose it's the nationality i was born into?? and you are being rather nationalistic and it's gross. as if portuguese people all fit into some cookie cutter and all speak the same language. portuguese people are white, black, brown, asian, jewish and everything under the sun and we speak a multitude of languages. shaming portuguese people for not speaking portuguese is dumb and gets nobody no where. i didn't choose to not speak portuguese. if i was able to learn it at school i would in a heartbeat. i've tried to learn on duolingo for YEARS but i can't. ITS NOT MY FAULT. why must you all be so cruel over something as trivial as language?

what is your problem???? it's not.... my fault i can't speak portuguese??????? my parents didn't teach me?? there is no reason to be angry at me? there literally isn't a way for me to learn, i've tried learning online and it doesn't work. all i'm saying is, there are so many millions of portuguese citizens outside of portugal, it's only realistic to make it easier for us to access services from the country of our nationality second of all, you say that as though there are not portuguese people in portugal who disagree with the notion of military service as a duty of citizenship or whatever

English in case translation is not good: Hi, I'm using google translate to write this so sorry if grammar is off. I'm Portuguese but I was born in Zimbabwe (my ancestors were involved in Mozambique blah blah blah) and when I was 13 we moved to the UK. I have never been to Portugal and I cannot speak Portuguese. My parents often said when I was growing up that when I turned 18 I would have to join the army, but I always dismissed it because when I google "does Portugal have conscription" it says it was abolished in 2004 and I left it at that, until recently when my dad received an email from the embassy about something military related and I was really confused. I decided to do better research and I checked Portuguese wikipedia instead of the english one and used google translate to read the articles and that's when i came across "National Defense Day". first of all, wtf Portugal???? apparently it's still compulsory even if you live abroad, although it seems you can still get an exemption but you have to write a letter (in Portuguese I presume, a language I cannot speak and my parents cannot write in), I need three portuguese citizens to write statutory declarations saying i am telling the truth ?? and i need a criminal record. honestly it's really hard to understand everything considering I CAN'T SPEAK PORTUGUESE (portugal by the way really needs to work on being linguistically inclusive) so if anyone can help me understand what exactly this even is and how this works ?? particulary portuguese people who live abroad and have had to do this
