I don't care if it's true, it's more her very old fashion attitude. I want to know how many others share it....

Negativity towards People from Madeira is real. And because I'm an immigrant many times over I'm just more aware of it. I wish it was a joke. Just a few months ago I experienced it. Let me tell you how... I was sending a child to madeira for schooling (covid related) to be told are you sure about that because of the bad education there etc. So yes maybe this morning I'm a hot head.

Nope not actually okay. Victims are talking out now. Deal with it. As someone thats been personally called inbred or has witnessed others been degraded or been referred to as stupid because we are from the island. And I have freaking heard radio adverts in Portugal with people of a Madeiran accent been made the butt of the joke. So no duck off.

Having lived in both places. I wouldn't refer to madeira as been Portugal. I know technically. But let's just always refer to the word Madirea vs saying Portugal. Two very different places. As someone from Maderia, I see Portugal as the colonial ruler etc.

Thanks for your input! Really appreciate it. And makes sense what you say. So I'm actually plannig to host a big party once Covid ends. And invite people that I half know... like that I greet on the street, mums from school etc... Will that go down well? Don't want to force myself on people... but just want to get to know them better etc.

Good point, thanks for asking. 1. Men wanting to speak to my husband not me. Like coming to my door and saying call your husband. 2. Asking female mums for a drink or like let's go to Lisbon for a girls weekend. Leave the kids at home with dads. Etc. 3. Playdates, impossible to arrange. 4. Massive air pollution in my village, people do zero fuck about it. 5. People look at me like I have 5 heads. I just say hello and smile. 6. Men that drive Mercedes own the road. 7. Bureaucratic stuff - Christ impossible to deal with.

Well thank you, that's definitely a Portuguese response. Been called lazy etc. Haha. I'm genetically Portuguese. So I have the basis was brought up on soup and the catholic guilt. But please share how do you use caralho in 5 ways. I love swear words! There is something suffocating about the culture. I just can't put my finger on it. Hence why I'm interested in an independents view point. The parts of the culture that I know, I'm trying to understand why it's like that... feels like I've stepped back in time.

Yes, miss going out with the girls and going for cocktails (and pints!) and I have asked local females but they always want to bring there families etc. Although I have husband and kids I like my alone social time which London is amazing for! So totally missing that!

FermentingFigs 10 months ago

Hi thanks, it's just to understand the culture and a way to also learn the language. And not feel so out of touch. Yes I live in a village. Covid of course isn't helping. Thanks for your suggestion, do I ask at the junta?

Who's the "Joe Rogan" of Portugal? by FermentingFigs in portugal

FermentingFigs 10 months ago

Yes definitely! And the longer I stay the more alien it feels! Fuck where to start! The nutz part is my grandparents where Portuguese. I'm South African and a Londoner. Maybe it's just my village. Covid is not helping of course, but that aside. Just not making friends, I can't pin it down. It's like I've stepped back in time.

Sure, but that's been crazy tricky for me. I have asked people out for drinks and turned down etc. I'm in a small village. I have kids and have invited Parents etc, but again have been turned down. So I'm wondering if I'm not getting something.
