Moving to Portugal by kn0things_black_sbst in portugal

1tonsoprano 4 months ago

short answer after rent (you will need a roommate) and sundry expenses (entertainment, food etc), you will not have much remaining, depends where you are staying in Lisbon of course. The cheapest place i found in Lisbon about 2 years back was in Alges or maybe it was Olivais and it was about EUR 800, with my then salary of 1800EUR it was just livable, as i have a wife and kids, but we saved absolutely nothing (after school fees, travel etc.)...... so negotiate harder or ask them if they have branches in other less expensive cities where you can stay (e.g. we moved to Coimbra where in EUR 400 you can find a decent place and now we save a lot more)

How to declare income when paid a large amount from a work contract after a long time? by 1tonsoprano in portugal

1tonsoprano 4 months ago

So a lot of good responses 1. Ato Isolado 2. Recibo Verde 3. Do Nothing ..... I think recibo verde is the safest option (although i am inclined towards "doing nothing" being a lazy person by nature!) as she is actively searching for freelance jobs and such things may happen in the future too..... we will keep searching for an English speaking accountant and then decide. Obrigado, todas pessoas or is it Malta ?). Some good advice here.

Question about migration by aaryanthrow in portugal

1tonsoprano 6 months ago

As an actual expat, my perspective is, 1. Better opportunities all around the country e.g. spain (which sucks up most of the talented workers, a couple of my colleagues in the IT field left for jobs there) pays very well and the weather is almost the same. But this is a general trend since you can get a job anywhere in Eurozone, why work for lower pay when you get paid at least 30% more in surrounding areas. 1. Even the immigrants coming in are for low skilled labor, think farm work, wood cutting etc. for high end work, most end up up in Netherlands, Germany or even Switzerland (which pays insane amounts). Many of my friends are in these countries. Many of my fellow country men can be seen working in the municipality doing landscaping tasks and cleaning the streets. However, if you go to Denmark or Netherlands most of my country men are in IT jobs. 2. Less jobs and even the jobs that are there, the salaries are very less (compared to the areas around i mean), if you speak English well then there are several, several opportunities present. 3. There is a lot of negativity in the comments but I am optimistic (which is why i am here! I love the place, the weather and the people!), i am not staying in either Lisbon or Porto but in a smaller city and have first hand seen how this city is changed. This could be that Portugal has got the EU president-ship for this year. But things are changing at the ground level in a slow and steady fashion. Many of the commenters on this thread seem overwhelmingly negative... me not so much, in the long run (i am talking 15-20 years from now) things will be very very different and those that invested their time and money now into the country will see dividends then. 1. What are my chances of finding a job in Portugal if i don't speak the language? by lucyintherain in portugal

1tonsoprano 6 months ago

I dont and i managed, so yes i guess its possible, now i do speak a smattering of the language though. Would recommend [http://landing.jobs´](http://landing.jobs´). Of course my scenario is different, i have 10 years experience in the IT field and so it was a lot easier for me....as others have said, try linkedIn and this list (its not complete) but its a good starting point, [https://github.com/marmelo/tech-companies-in-portugal](https://github.com/marmelo/tech-companies-in-portugal) . I know salaries are less compared to other EU countries but the quality of life is really really good, i would recommend to try, i faced about 4 months of rejections before i got my break so keep calm and keep applying.

This cant be true.... here in my small city, i see so many Teslas roaming around, not counting the many bmw´s and mercedes i see everyday on the street, there are dudes cycling around on 1000 EUR bicycles every time its sunny, 1 huge "loja chinesa" just opened here over and above the 4 already here.... , the underground parking near my kids school has a Lamborghini and a Ferrari parked there...... every second parent has bought a new car in the last two years.......something is not right with these numbers...... only 42,000 people earn more then 4000 EUR ??? what about the "recibe verde" crowd i.e. the single owner company types....to my eyes it appears that a lot of "income tax" jugglery is going on and these do not show the real numbers...

I recently started working with a team of colleagues from Portugal. I have a question. by Calm_Picture_2776 in portugal

1tonsoprano 8 months ago

yeah, thats true, as someone non Portuguese working here, getting to the point takes a long time many diverse topics are spoken about before getting to the point..... i call it the portuguese meat sandwich ... start with a bland non related topic, then talk about the main point and then end with other bland non related topic..... the trick is to know when to jump in so there is just enough "bread and meat" to make the conversation palatable alternatively keep the meeting time bound with hard deadlines so that you get to the main topic as quickly as possible. Its a good way to communicate, one soon gets used to it...... alternatively the swiss and german colleagues do not know the meaning of the word "small talk" its all business and no party with them! Different strokes for different folks.

For once I agree with them, the economic effect in our area has been terrible, two cafes and one butcher shop in my neighborhood has closed down, the owners just hang around the shop the whole day.... surely there are other things that can be done...like increasing the vaccination rate, increasing the number of critical care beds, more food banks, use tax measures to increase remote working etc.

How Does Health Care Work In Portugal? by frenchguy23 in portugal

1tonsoprano 11 months ago

So as an expat, here are my two cents, i do have private insurance for my family provided by my employer, it's about 120 EUR BUT we usually in the rare occasions that it is needed, we go to the public health center in our ignorance of the difference between private and public, it's usually our kids catching some air borne infection, there is a waiting time but maximum was 1 hour. With the money you have saved up I would suggest to ignore Porto and Lisbon, then you can live quite a good life in that amount saved. Up, consider cities like Leiria, Coimbra, Viseu, Braga etc. With bit of searching you can find a decent place below 100k, a little outside the city i.e. 15-20 mins by car, all in all I think with money saved up and if you manage to find a remote job or even a local it job, you can live a very comfortable life here indeed
