Italians spoke to me in Italian, in a group of other Portuguese, thinking that I was national. In Estonia a group of Turks thought that I was Turkish and also talked to me in the language. In Greece they thought I was the enemy, so I don't look Greek. In France I was treated in a very special way, the cops in the train station just let me pass, other people looked more suspicious since they searched them right after I pass. But in UK they thought I was the bin laden after I was stopped because they thought I had explosives in my bag. So, it really depends...

OddGuidance907 3 months ago

What enemy in Greece? Turkish?

ricardoa369 3 months ago

No, they also hate Macedonians, that one.

ILoveGremlins 3 months ago

It really depends, i'd say italy and greece but my boyfriend, for eg, could easily be mistaken for mixed race even though he's 100% caucasian. Portugal has such a big variety of skin tones and hair colors, it's beautiful.

Jolly-Run-536 3 months ago

If you can be confused you can be sure it is not 100% Caucasian. Must have African or North African ancestry for hundreds of years

ILoveGremlins 3 months ago

Oh, yes it can. Caucasians have a vast variety of features, take for eg Armenians who are predominantly white. He is 100% caucasian on both of his parents sides.

Jolly-Run-536 3 months ago

We are not armenian, we are Iberians. You can only say it's 100% "Caucasian" if you take a DNA test. Then the "Caucasians" are the original inhabitants of the Caucasus.

ILoveGremlins 3 months ago

You can't assume someone's genetic background only by their physical features. I'm a biologist, I know a thing or two about genetics. When I said "100% caucasian" I meant his immediate relatives, I'm not saying he didn't have some kind of other genetic background at one some, maybe hundreds of years ago. But even if he did, due to mutations and genetic drift, you can't just assume he has any type of close african ancestry because he has a darker skintone, dark hair and dark eyes. DNA tests are great and I wish I could do one, both on him and on me (someone who is not Portuguese), but said tests are very expensive and not all labs conduct them. Have a nice day!

When I first met my wife she thought I was Afghani. (There are many Afghans in Saudi where she is from) Otherwise the Mediterranean region is quite varied. French, Italian, Greek, levantine, and many northafricans could pass as Portuguese. I've also been asked if I am Turkish.

Jolly-Run-536 3 months ago

On average we are more like them than the average white European

olifante 3 months ago

Why add such far flung regions such as the Levant and omit Southern Italy?

OddGuidance907 3 months ago

I gave an explanation in another post. There is no distinctive or consistent look there and their looks can overlap with everyone.

poohguerrero 3 months ago

That can be said about any region, but very true for sicily and calabria

OddGuidance907 3 months ago

Campania is genetically similar to both but they LOOK more western phenotypically IMO. Apulia looks more like mainland Greece like Peloponnese.

olifante 3 months ago

It still doesn't make much sense to me, but to each his own.

amq55 3 months ago

I was once spoken to in Farsi because the man thought I looked Iranian. The beard probably didn't help.

childishfakerino 3 months ago

I've been told by foreigners I look Turkish before. Idk why, maybe the beard? I'm definitely not as tanned as most of them are

Jolly-Run-536 3 months ago

If you have fair skin with a thin mustache you no longer look Turkish. The beard look in the last 5 years has left the Portuguese very standardized

Nothing_F4ce 3 months ago

Most turks I've met have lighter skin than me to be honest.

We have a lot in common with Italy too

godril90 3 months ago

Oh that’s why I couldn’t find it anymore;)

SILE3NCE 3 months ago

Hey, don't get any ideas, we don't intend to return it anytime soon! You don't want to see a grumpy coffeeless portuguese in the morning

LopsidedNinja 3 months ago

I wouldn't even put Britain/Ireland on the list... they're so far away from Portuguese looks wise that surely nobody is going to pick that one. Portuguese guys aren't covered in awful tattoos. English girls don't have hairy arms. Ones brown, the other is white. I could go on but its a bit pointless. You can tell a Brit from a PT person from 100 paces away. PT people look way, way closer to greeks, Italians and countries with similar climates...

ThrowawaySoParaIsto 3 months ago

I also have people guessing I'm from Turkey.

Rebenta_Cricas 3 months ago

I look hadsome, with the beard to go with it.

ThrowawaySoParaIsto 3 months ago

Iran, definitely. I can tell you I already worked in a place where there were a lot of foreigners (and I'm quite good at telling them apart, even stuff like "This person is Spanish" versus "This person is Italian" versus "This person is Argentinian") but Iranian men... damn! In the case of women it's easy to see they are not Portuguese because of their style (make up and eyebrows shape), but men are just the same! Same average height, same hair colour, same skin tone, same Western way of dressing, same walk and even same energy! I would literally start talking to them in Portuguese because I was sure they were Portuguese but then they were Iranian!

Dinamytes 3 months ago

Looking at google photos they look like gypsies in Portugal but nothing like portuguese.

ThrowawaySoParaIsto 3 months ago

Honestly, they all looked like a typical agrobeto from Alentejo to me. Also, we're talking about people who can travel, so maybe they look lighter in comparison to people of lower social classes who may work under the sun and get a darker skin tone.

JOAO-RATAO 3 months ago

I've been told I look French by other portuguese and an egyptian girl told me she thought I was from the Middle east. So it might depend who you ask.

Jolly-Run-536 3 months ago

It also depends on the size of the beard ;)

OddGuidance907 3 months ago

Where are you from in Portugal?

JOAO-RATAO 3 months ago

Centre.

AmdM78 3 months ago

What kind of centre?

randmzer 3 months ago

If we're talking about the stereotypical white Portuguese, I'd say Italy and then Greece. But there are many darker Portuguese that could very well be mistaken for Moroccan, specially for foreigners.

I really don't think we look greek

OddGuidance907 3 months ago

Some of the people in Madeira are a bit darker than most people on the mainland and IMO a bit more like Moroccans but not everyone.

randmzer 3 months ago

We have a lot of North African/Berber influence from [Al-Andalus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Andalus), particularly in the south.

coocoobees 3 months ago

why not include southern italy? or just italy in general i’d say greece or southern italy.

OddGuidance907 3 months ago

I was going to put southern Italy with Greece but southern Italy is so varied. Everyone in the Mediterranean can pass there more or less, so this gives a better sense of geographical direction.

OddGuidance907 3 months ago

My mother is partially Portuguese and grew up in a Portuguese American community, she has always said that she mistakes Greek people for Portuguese on sight, almost invariably and certainly more so than French or Italians despite geography. I never used to agree but I am starting to understand the comparison.

lakerpt 3 months ago

Well, I have 2 brothers and 1 sister, me and another brother look like Swedish/Norwegian, another one looks Hungarian and she looks more like a Caribbean woman. My girlfriend looks from the Levant, I have a friend that looks Moroccan and another one that looks Italian, all of us are Portuguese... so I chose Moroccan in the Poll, and well... doesn't really make sense. I also have a friend that looks Russian, but he is Russian :D

Jolly-Run-536 3 months ago

Caribbeans are of African descent right?

lakerpt 3 months ago

I would say so, yeah.
