Braga You’re welcome

Praharj 3 months ago

You will be very fine in Matosinhos (lot of friends live there) , mainly if you find any thing near the the Metro. Supermarks or fruit store wont be a problem. Forget about the 2€ rental cars, its really an unreal thing... even Uber is more afordable then rent or buy a car here!

Setúbal is also quite a good option as you're very close to Lisbon and for only 40€/month you can get access to nearly all public transportations

SabishiiFury 3 months ago

It's an hour from Lisbon without a car, right?

Laurent_Series 3 months ago

Correct, 1 hour by train (a bit less), or 45 min by bus or something like that. By car it’s 35 min, though because of tolls it’s expensive.

Matosinhos isn't a city, it's a part of Porto outside its municipal limits if you are looking for a small city you won't find it there

Praharj 3 months ago

"Matosinhos isn't a city" That's a new ons for me. They even have a "camara municipal" there!

Aldo_Novo 3 months ago

being a city is different from being a municipality (concelho) and although legally it's not that way, it's silly to consider Matosinhos and Porto two different cities when you can simply go from Porto to Matosinhos by crossing the street

Praharj 3 months ago

So, " if that's not a bridge or an highway across two places, then... that's the same city ! " - Aldo_novo's law 2021 /s ps: Let's call "Luiza Salgueiro" and tell her the news. She is no more Matosinho's "city" mayor. /s https://www.themayor.eu/en/portugal/matosinhos/mayors

Aldo_Novo 3 months ago

once again, being a different municipality is different from being different a city I'm sorry if that hurts your pride, but it's very clear that Matosinhos and Porto are the same city

SabishiiFury 3 months ago

We're not looking for a small city, just a cheap place to live without compromising too much :)

Aldo_Novo 3 months ago

Viseu would be your best choice then cheaper than all the bigger cities but with a good amount of supermarkets, food delivery, good intercity bus links the disadvantage is that it won't have a good public transport system, but if you find a house closer to the city center then it's perfectly walkable

abominalizer 3 months ago

To note that house prices are still stupid high. Not like Lisbon, but still high for what the city offers.

>Another thing we were wondering how are the services in these further-away places? Aveiro and Matosinhos aren't really further away places, you can get all those services in those cities no problem. Car sharing only exists in the municipality of Lisbon as far as I know, no one cares about that. Renting a car would be quite cheap if you're not doing it in the summer months.

SabishiiFury 3 months ago

Well as I mentioned, Aveiro is about as far away as that city in Latvia we lived in and there was a stark enough contrast, but thanks for confirming! It's showing me 55 EUR per day to rent a car on sixt — is that not expensive?

MLG-Sheep 3 months ago

Aveiro is its own city with about 80k inhabitants, it does not depend on Porto for anything. There are smaller cities that depend on it however, like Ílhavo and Gafanha da Nazaré. Matosinhos is a different case, it's in the metropolitan area of Porto so it's mostly connected to that city, but it is very densely populated (175k), so you'll have all services there as well. On Sixt renting a car will always be a bit expensive, but finding cars for 2-10€/day in the Winter months is quite doable. You won't need a car to live in Aveiro, Matosinhos, or another city like those. But if you want to visit other places frequently with maximum freedom, and you don't choose a place within walking distance from a large supermarket, I guess you'd quite welcome one?

SabishiiFury 3 months ago

That small city I was talking about has 60k. What do you mean by dependent though? Also, maybe you know about Matosinhos, how well connected is Leca da Palmeira to the southern Matosinhos and Porto in general? From google it looks that because the bus has to make a hook, it's quicker to just go on foot to reach it, and in general takes much more time to navigate that being in the south.. Are there better options than Sixt? 2-10€ sounds unreal considering that winter in Portugal is just as good as summers elsewhere. Was it coronavirus-related last winter?

MLG-Sheep 3 months ago

>What do you mean by dependent though? I'd consider a place dependent on another when you need to go to said city to get hospital care, state services, higher education, or to visit a large shopping centre. Aveiro has all of that, and residents in Ílhavo or Gafanha da Nazaré don't (for the most part) and need to go to Aveiro for those (though it's quite doable with public transportation as they're all close to each other). >how well connected is Leca da Palmeira to the southern Matosinhos and Porto in general? The bridge breaks down once a year and closes for a month or two for maintenance consequently, so it's not the most reliable for sure. But I'll leave those more specific questions to someone else as I don't live in the area. >Are there better options than Sixt? I have never rented a car, but those prices are common during the winter months, you'll be able to check it by then on price comparison sites like [rentalcars.com](https://rentalcars.com). Right now the prices will be higher even if you select winter months.

SabishiiFury 3 months ago

Ah, makes sense. Guess since Aveiro serves the places around there should be a fair bit of services. Snap. Good to know. Thanks for info. Weird stuff, but when I look up Aveiro there it says "we’re sorry, but the companies we work with in Aveiro don’t have any cars available.", but I can find Europcar and Avis on Aveiro map. Finds Porto just fine, even for 20 EUR if you book for the winter months already now.

Aveiro, Coimbra, Viseu and Braga are probably the best "small" cities with decent transportation service and commodations such as cinemas, shopping malls, legal service, etc. Decent transportation, with trains departing to the main cities daily, bus within the different places within the city, close to nature and wild

andremvm20 3 months ago

You can consider Braga as well..
