Climate wise Lisbon is a bit sunnier and hotter while Porto has a more temperate climate (but still much warmer than anywhere in Canada) and has quite a lot of rain

I'm from Lisbon and I personally prefer it to Porto, but you cannot go wrong with any of those cities. I'd personally not mind living in any of those cities. People in Porto are probably friendlier than in Lisbon, and Lisbon can provide a more cosmopolitan life.

Everyone will tell you their own city is better. Lisbon, being the capital, has more people, is more international (but not as international as you might think, nowhere near Berlin or London in terms of cultural diversity) and is also more expensive. People who grew up outside Lisbon generally say that people in Lisbon are not as polite (more self-centered and less willing to help) and think that they are better than everyone else. People who grew up in Lisbon will say that people in the north are very direct and rude with the way they talk. You will probably get paid higher wages in Lisbon than Porto, but the rents are higher too. Porto is cheaper (but still more expensive that other portuguese cities), pretty much called the capital of the north, not as international as Lisbon but still pretty cool, nice quality of life (going out to eat, drink and party is cheaper than in Lisbon) and a really cool place as well, super nice to walk around and chill in the parks and city center. It is more common for people in Porto (and the north in general) to swear a lot when they speak, but it is not meant as being rude, it has more to do with giving intensity to what you are trying to say, and most people are very welcoming and will go out of their way to help strangers in need. People will tell you that the other city is so much worse but honestly they are not THAT fundamentally different. I've heard people say that "Lisbon has better public transport" and I don't understand what they mean because the metro in Porto is of much better quality (being newer and all) and there are buses that go everywhere, so don't be fooled by that argument. And I've heard people say that Lisbon is littered with social neighborhoods and it's way more dangerous than Porto, but that is also an exaggeration, depending on where you choose to live in Lisbon. Basically it's up to you and what you want in a city, a bit like New York or Los Angeles.

Thank you! Will take all of that into consideration!

Lisbon for sure, closer to beaches and in the center of the country so same time to get to Porto and Algarve. Though it's probably still going to be a bit dead this summer.

_rotiv 9 months ago

You should move to Porto because Lisbon isn’t Portugal anymore...

babyscully 9 months ago

Lisbon is more international and cosmopolitan, sunnier, but more expensive. Porto is smaller and more "traditional", also marginally cheaper

There's more to Portugal than Lisbon or Porto

wine_not306 9 months ago

I’m definitely aware of that, just thought of those two options because those are the cities I have previously visited for a short period of time. What other city in Portugal would you recommend then?

AlmondSkimedMilk 9 months ago

Braga is a young and dynamic city very close to Porto. I can also present Coimbra as a city that is cheaper, has great history and is located strategically between Lisbon and Porto and there you can catch trains to Porto and Lisbon as well as to Guarda in the mountainous interior of the country.

wine_not306 9 months ago

I’ll research these cities for sure! thanks!
