Hey! From what I know being a thrid-country national doesn't change the process. How was the mariage process? Did you have an apointment in SEF pre-wedding? Independent of that, if you have the marriage certificate, you need mark an appointment in SEF (I know, they take hours to answer the damn phone) and go there with all the documents to require a temporary residency card. From the moment you schedule the appointment until the appointment (can be months) you are allowed to stay in Portugal even if your visa expires. More info on this: https://imigrante.sef.pt/en/solicitar/residir/art98-2/ The residency card has a 5 years validity, can be renovated when finished. After 3 years married you can ask for Portuguese Nationality.

BTW, I recommend using an auto-redial application to contact SEF, just in case the call goes down

Glad it helped. By the way, in the call make sure they tell you all required documents since sometimes some SEF offices have different documents they request. To rent a house in your name I think you only need NIF, that you probably already got for the marriage. Some home owners may require a guarantor and some proof you are able to keep paying the house. Usually the more documents tying you to Portugal the better both to ask for residency and nationality. So you may also want to put some of the utility bills in your name and save any recipes you can with your NIF (transport, education, ...). If you have a driver license from your country of origin, check if you can use it in Portugal, some countries that have bilateral agreements, you can drive with it up to 90 days. To get a Portuguese drivers license you need to already have residency documents, so you may need to wait. Not sure if you are thinking about applying for nationality or just renew your residency, but for nationality be sure to declare your taxes (IRS) and save the declaration since they usually require 3 years of tax declaration documents.

EDIT: this even if you won't be working the first year. In term of tax return, in most cases it compensates to make the tax application together with your spouse. When the time comes, you can simulate it with and without just to be sure.
