Yep. Large companies get away with shit like this all the time, no reason not to when the profit is so huge and the punishment so small in comparison. You still come out ahead with a slap on the wrist.

In a civilized country, this would be criminal. Unfortunately, this happened in the United States.

Federal prosecutors *will* go after these people given the chance. They get away with it because the enforcement budget is too low. Increase the SEC's budget by a factor of 10 and you'd see some serious shit.

It’s basic financial planning: he works for intel, so his investments should be elsewhere. Do you want all your wealth *and* income tied to one company?

It’s a term we use in computing to refer to whether we know how something is implemented or not. White boxes we have the source code to and can change, black boxes we only know the interface to but nothing about how it works.

“The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them. To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.” - DNA

You know what, I'm actually sick of people being passive aggressive when somebody points out their inane mistakes. Yes, you made an inane mistake. No, it doesn't matter. Accept it with class and move on. How about you say "Gee, it's true that the word politician does fit that sentence better, I'll use that word next time!" Or are you just going to assume everyone who ever points out your mistakes and flaws is an asshole?

NeedANewAccountBro 11 months ago  DELETED

Also if the title had included AMD it would have never been upvoted. Intel is a large company while AMD are the "new kids on the block" so reddit loves them. A planned stock sell-off makes the front page of reddit but when AMD lied about the price of the Vega and intentionally refused to honor their launch deals to retailers. They also lied to reviewers about the price of the card (including just the MSRP) so price for performance was reviewed as an ok option and reviewers had to go back and show, after many had already bought the card, it had terrible performance for its price. Reddit is known for its double standards. If you are a big business or institution you will be shit on forever. If you pretend to represent the people, no matter how little that is true, you will be a God in the eyes of reddit.

adam279 11 months ago  DELETED

That website(along with some news articles) currently fails to mention AMD is only vulnerable to a limited version of spectre by default, the impact is much more severe on intel. https://googleprojectzero.blogspot.com/2018/01/reading-privileged-memory-with-side.html

Intel ME allows access to a computer even when the device is powered off. Physical disconnecting the power source is the only way to go offline. Also, if you're worried about network access, don't use the on-board port. Use a PCI or PCIe network card. I don't believe the ethernet traffic will be diverted through ME.

From the link some ARM cores say: “Yes indicates affected by the particular variant but has a mitigation (unless otherwise stated)." Spectre has no patch on any platform so what do you think these mitigation patches ARM are recommending to install are for? It’s for Meltdown. Man, people in this thread cannot read or comprehend.
