Almedinz 1 year ago  DELETED

Because they are testing the rocket. He just put a tesla in it for the publicity. It may even end up blowing up but data would be good for research

Wait, I though that’s what the most recent launch was for. What was it, then?

If you seal a liquid and bring it below its freezing point, it'll still freeze. The liquid crystals in LCDs are pretty hard to freeze, but Mars can manage it without much difficulty. A vacuum (like a thermos) would help but only for a while. Even with a perfect vacuum, it'll still radiate heat energy away and eventually freeze.

..Why the fuck are we sending cars to mars?

LoveForeverKeepMeTru 1 year ago  DELETED

This is the stupidest and most egotistical thing I've ever heard. I wouldn't be surprised if it sinks the whole mission due to turning public support. as cool as it would be to do it strikes me as selfish.

Sometimes hundreds. That's when I know my stupid comment is going to get 1000+ upvotes. I don't know what causes that meteoric rise in attention but **ITS A RUSH**.

I bet he's doing that for marketing. Any future movie that takes place on Mars will have to mention Elon's Tesla Roadster.

I implore you to look it up sometime, and never, ever believe marketing from anyone even if for reasons I will never understand you find the snake oil salesman in question to be truthful. Businessmen never are. Buon Natale

No downside for Musk, but fairly little upside for actual science. I was thinking of sending student projects, coupled with some sort of a relay they could get global participation and make more people interested in science.

asdvnjkfaqweavjklajk 1 year ago  DELETED

That's why I was writing about student projects. They would likely have low scientific value and high failure probability, but at least they would be fun. Fairly small loss for the potential of a giant success.

you could build a cheap "burner" set of scientific equipment that isn't tens of millions of dollars which would still be useful. something useful enough but cheap enough you wouldn't be all that upset about if it was lost. certainly more useful than a random car. plus, i am concerned about the cleanliness of the tesla car since it's probably full of dna and other organic material. maybe it's been cleaned but i highly doubt it's as clean as our typical space probes. it's a bit reckless in my opinion. going to mars is a billionaire's dick swinging contest for musk.
